Guidelines For Providing Snacks in Schools
Types of Recommended Snacks
The following snack items can be provided by the parent or the facility:
Non-hazardous Foods t hat Require Minimal Preparation and/or Portioning
Includes such things as baked goods, crackers & cheese and pre-cut washed fruits & veggies.
Non-Hazardous Foods that are Pre-Packaged
Includes pre-packaged cookies, crackers, chips, fruit cups, yogurt, etc.
Methods of Snack Food Preparation
Unless the facility has an approved kitchen, extensive food preparation is not permitted. However, the following types of food preparation/food handling are considered to be acceptable:
Cutting Up and/or Portioning of Snacks
This may be done at home or at the facility, provided the facility has an approved area for handling foods. Parents should ensure that home-based preparation or portioning is conducted in a sanitary manner.
Food Allergies
Nowadays, a large percentage of children have allergies, some of which can be life threatening. Therefore we recommend the following actions with respect to the provision of snacks:
Have parents notify staff of any allergies that their children may have.
Provide this list of food allergies to all parents and staff members who may be providing/preparing snacks.
Instruct parents and staff to restrict snacks to foods that the children are not allergic to.
Remember: The food handler is the single most important source of food contamination. Regular hand washing with liquid soap and warm water is required for children and staff alike, before and after handling food.
According to the World Health Organization, "Hand washing is one of the most effective and cheapest measures against infections and foodborne disease."
If you have any further questions regarding the provision of snacks in schools and child care facilities, please contact your local public health inspector.
